pie or, perhaps for definitively, the substrata of pie that is cake

What makes you say that cake is a subset of pie? I propose that rather pie is a subset of cake.

It all depends on your reference frame. Pie is equally a subset of cake as cake is a subset of pie.
Or do the bakery delights not follow the same protocol as analyical mechanics?

hmm, after re-reading this thread several months after the fact, I can see why it ended....

But by the very nature of your making that statement, this thread has been resurrected. So you can't say it ended at the same time that you're actually continuing it. *Paradox Points*

Not true.
I made that statement (by typing it out) moments BEFORE resurrecting the thread (by hitting the post button). Thus, there is finite time between my observation that the thread ended and my actual resurrection of the thread, and there is no paradox.

Unfortunately, other alumni have since found this forum and necro-posted...

Twice!
Therefore, this thread does indeed continue to thrive.
Also, I consider cake and pie to be mutally exclusive. The only exception to this would be a 'pie' chart displaying statistics about various yummy cakes.

I don't know what necro-posting is, but you point about pie charts is well taken.
What, by contrast, are your thoughts on pi charts? (see what I did there?)

i don't know how i never read this thread before, but unfortunatly i did. and since i can't unread it, i will critique.
pie and cake are not mutually exclusive, but neither is one a subset of the other. pie is a filled pastry, where filling is the focus not the pastry itself. (this is as opposed to an elclaire or filled donut where the pastry itself is the emphisis and the filling is as a condiment) a cake on the otherhand is a risen baked (yeah i know you can steam a cake, but for the sake of definition we'll call that baking too) confection characterized by its texture. if filled or iced the cake itself is still the focus. a torte or tart may be either a cake or a pie, as it is a layered confection, characterized by its construction rather than its focus or cooking method (or lack thereof).
that being said, i like pie

YES!
This thread continues to thrive almost three and a half years after its creation. Another year or so and we'll get to page 2.
Given the recent election, I believe we can categorically say that pie has proven superior to cake. Pie was clearly elected with 375 electoral votes, and cake is proving once again that it's appeal is limited to an aging population focused mostly in the South. I look forward to 8 years of pie's positive influence in the world.
